In Praise of Shadows (陰翳礼讃In'ei Raisan) is an essay on Japanese aesthetics by the Japanese author and novelist Jun'ichirō Tanizaki. It was translated into English by the academic students of Japanese literature, Thomas Harper and Edward Seidensticker. A new translation by Gregory Starr was published in December 2017.

Publication[edit]

Already sketched out in a series of comments that appear in Some Prefer Nettles, Tanizaki's aesthetic credo, in the more finished form of this essay, was originally published in 1933 in Japanese. The English translation was published in 1977 by Leete's Island Books.[1]

The translation contains a foreword by architect and educator Charles Moore and an afterword by one of the translators, Thomas J. Harper. Harper was Senior Lecturer in Japanese Literature at the Australian National University in Canberra. The other translator, Edward Seidensticker, was Professor of Japanese Literature at Columbia University.

Much shorter than the author's novels, this book is a small meditative work of 73 pages, of which 59 are the essay itself.

A new English translation by Gregory Starr, with illustrations and photographs by Andrew Pothecary, was published by Sora Books in December, 2017. The 102-page edition also includes a foreword by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and an afterword by Japanese literature Professor Eve Zimmerman of Wellesley College.[2]

Themes[edit]

The essay consists of 16 sections that discuss traditional Japanese aesthetics in contrast with change. Comparisons of light with darkness are used to contrast Western and Asian cultures. The West, in its striving for progress, is presented as continuously searching for light and clarity, while the subtle and subdued forms of oriental art and literature are seen by Tanizaki to represent an appreciation of shadow and subtlety, closely relating to the traditional Japanese concept of sabi. In addition to contrasting light and dark, Tanizaki further considers the layered tones of various kinds of shadows and their power to reflect low sheen materials like gold embroidery, patina and cloudy crystals. In addition, he distinguishes between the values of gleam and shine.

The text presents personal reflections on topics as diverse as architecture and its fittings, crafts, finishes, jade, food, cosmetics and mono no aware (the art of impermanence). Tanizaki explores in close description the use of space in buildings, lacquerware by candlelight,[1] monastery toilets[3] and women in the dark of a brothel. The essay acts as 'a classic description of the collision between the shadows of traditional Japanese interiors and the dazzling light of the modern age'.[attribution needed][4]

Cultural notes[edit]

Tanizaki's observations include cultural notes on topics such as arts and crafts, paper making, lacquerware design and the Japanese room. He gives a recipe for the unusual dish of Persimmon leaf Sushi on pages 60 to 62. He also refers to many historic places and temples, as well as celebrated eateries of the day, along with customs like 'moon-viewing' (tsukimi).

Reception[edit]

The work has been praised for its insight and relevance into issues of modernity and culture,[6] and Tanizaki has been called an 'ecological prophet'.[6]A. C. Grayling has described Tanizaki's essay on Japanese taste as a 'hymn to nuance' and an exercise in mindfulness.[1]

Junichiro Tanizaki selects for praise all things delicate and nuanced, everything softened by shadows and the patina of age, anything understated and natural—as for example the patterns of grain in old wood, the sound of rain dripping from eaves and leaves, or washing over the footing of a stone lantern in a garden, and refreshing the moss that grows about it – and by doing so he suggests an attitude of appreciation and mindfulness, especially mindfulness of beauty, as central to life lived well.[1]

In the spirit of Tanizaki juxtaposing the cultures of east and west, Grayling notes a link to a similar approach and emphasis in the British writer Walter Pater whose late Renaissance essay he quotes, 'The service of speculative culture towards the human spirit is to rouse, to startle it to a life of constant and eager observation'. Grayling concludes that the difference between the two essayists lies in the 'tranquility' of Tanizaki and the 'intensity' of Pater.[1]Program sarjana separuh masa uthm.

In 2001, Random House published a reprint in paperback.[7]

Regarding the new translation published by Sora Books, David Mitchell, author of Cloud Atlas, wrote, 'A rhapsodic meditation on a vanishing world, its aesthetics and its values. Gregory Starr's new translation is pitch perfect and transparent.' Stephen Mansfield, in the Japan Times wrote, 'Tanizaki, in Gregory Starr’s new and highly accomplished translation, samples a number of instances where the use and perception of light differs from the West, noting that, where Western paper reflects light, traditional Japanese paper absorbs it.'[8]

In Praise of Shadows is an essay on beauty. It is less of a meditation but more of an unfocused sequence of thoughts. Tanizaki talks about wooden furniture, subdued lighting, lacquer-work, Noh plays, and the pleasure of taking good shits.
Tanizaki prefers obscure and hidden things to those directly revealed. He likes rural things, shadowy things, dirty things. He's not exactly a crusty reactionary here, but someone who wants to return something lost, obscure and concealed.

Eu a 10 páginas de ter iniciado o livro só pensava 'não! Este livro tem de ser mais que isto. Não pode, não pode continuar assim!'
Mas não. O livro continuou na mesma veia desinteressante.
Basicamente o autor compara a importância que a sombra ou as sombras possuem na sua cultura com a importância quase inexistente que as mesmas possuem no mundo ocidental moderno.
Chegou ao ponto de falar em RETRETES! E comparar as retretes orientais com as ocidentais.

A backward, reactionary, nationalistic prose piece disguised as an essay on aesthetics, which engages in strange speculation and musing that is not at all well supported. But it gets better towards the end when its cantankerousness and hyperbole get amusing, and it does ultimately manage to express a mournful nostalgia for a dying aesthetic, even if that aesthetic is more of a personal aesthetic than the author admits, rather than being an expression of national character.

If Tanizaki had written this book from a Westerner's perspective, the essay would be regarded as retrograde and pessimistically nostalgic. To be sure, only a highly-evolved culture is capable of a reciprocal relationship between production and appreciation. A wholesale dismissal of progress, however, is no way to get there. After reading about the concept of Wabi-Sabi in Leonard Koren`s book Wabi-Sabi: for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers it was only natural to continue with this essay. Again this was very enriching, but this one was a lot more poetic and captivating. Gostaria de alargar o beiral desse edifício que tem o nome de «literatura», escurecer-lhe as paredes, mergulhar na sombra o que está demasiado visível e despojar-lhe o interior de qualquer ornamento supérfluo.

Una reliquia. En este libro Tanizaki nos lleva por los caminos de las sombras. ¿Qué pasó con Japón cuando se iluminó tanto como Occidente? Un recorrido minucioso e interesante sobre la transformación de la cultura nipona a partir de la introducción (muchas veces exagerada) de la luz eléctrica y otros avances tecnológicos.

A startling little book that taught me a lot about Japanese aesthetics. A real eye-opener. It's all so sensible and natural and yet it is so far removed from our Western preoccupation with clarity and light! I also enjoyed the resonances with Peter Zumthor's Atmospheres which I read on the same day. I've put it on the rereading shelf.

Por mucho rato no sabía si darle 4 o 5 estrellas.
Primero que todo me sorprendió. Pensé que iba a encontrar algo más docto, difícil de leer o entender. Pero ocurrió todo lo contrario. La parte de los retretes es bastante chistoso. Hasta ahí no dudaba en darle las 5 estrellas, pero llegué al final. Hay una parte que habla del color de piel, de la cual no estoy nada de acuerdo. Entiendo que eran otros tiempo y hay que entenderlo en ese contexto histórico, pero me sigue haciendo ruido.

A beautiful little essay that I certainly enjoyed more than I thought I would. I tend to shy away from non-fiction works as a result of their normally dryness in nature, although I found this to be intriguing and of sufficient length that I can feel that I took something from it without having to rummage through hundreds of pages.
