Saravanan Meenatchi is a 2011-2018 IndianTamil-languagetelevision series broadcast on STAR Vijay. The first season was broadcast from 07 November 2011.[1] The second season of the show which started as a sequel and next generation story of the first season, was broadcast from 21 October 2013. The third season featured a different story and cast broadcast from 18 July 2016. Saravanan Meenatchi ended up with season 3 being the last version of the franchise on 17 August 2018.[2][3]It is the second longest ran Tamil serial.

Plot summary[edit]

The story revolves around Saravanan and Meenatchi who are poles apart in terms of personality, background, attitudes towards life, etc. Saravanan is a Chennai-based radio jockey from an affluent family.[4] Meenatchi is a small-town girl from Thirunelveli, working as a teacher in a small school. The story begins as the two families meet for a marriage proposal between the two, but things go wrong and the wedding does not happen. However, Saravanan and Meenatchi find themselves falling in love with each other.

Casting[edit]

The lead pair in season 1 it was Mirchi Senthil and Sreeja Chandran.[5] The name of the serial is derived from the names of the characters of the serial 'Madurai' starring the same lead pair.[6] The serial is directed by Azhagar, and the story, screenplay and dialogues are by Francis Kathiravan. The series was a major hit in Indian and Sri Lanka and received immense popularity across Asia.

Reception[edit]

Saravanan Meenatchi attracted high viewership ratings in India during its broadcast in 2011-2013. The cast members became household names and shot to stardom overnight, several of them became the faces of various endorsements and advertisements. After the series ended, Mirchi Senthil and Sreeja Chandran got married on 2 July 2014 in Tirupati. It was a family affair and no Celebes's were present.[7]

Season 2 begins with Shakthi Saravanan who returns to India as Saravanana and Meenakshi's eldest son, 25 years after his parents went overseas. He wants to search for a bride who is like his mother.

  • The show was remade in Telugu language as 'Raja Rani', which aired on Maa TV from 6 July 2016 to 3 September 2016 for 73 Episodes and Kannada language as 'Just Maath Maathalli', which aired on Suvarna TV from 15 August 2016 to 21 January 2017 for 138 Episodes.[12]
  • A Bengali language remake was broadcast on Star Jalsha from March 20 2017 to 3 December 2017 on Monday to Sunday at 5:00PM (IST) as Premer Kahini and ended with 182 Episodes.

International broadcast[edit]

The Series was released on 7 November 2011 on Vijay TV. The Show was also broadcast internationally on Channel's international distribution.

  • It was aired in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, United States, Europe, Malaysia, Mauritius and South Africa on Vijay TV.
  • In Canada, the drama aired on Tamil Canadians-oriented channel on Asian Television Network 9:30 hours after its original Tamil Nadu broadcast with English Subtitle.
  • In Sri LankaTamil Channel on Shakthi TV. It was aired Monday through Friday at 7:30PM (SST) with Sinhalese subtitles.
